Material Cost Estimator
Estimate the total material cost of any construction or renovation project. Add as many materials as you need, set quantity, unit and price, apply waste and tax, and get an instant grand-total estimate — with a printable PDF report.
How to estimate material costs
Three simple steps to a complete construction material cost estimate.
Add a row for every material your project needs — cement, lumber, tile, rebar, paint, fixtures. Name each one so your estimate reads clearly.
Set how much you need, the unit it's sold in, and the price per unit. Line totals update live as you type — no formulas to remember.
Add an optional waste allowance and tax, then see your full breakdown and grand total — ready to copy or download as a PDF.
Material Cost Estimator — Free & Accurate
Our material cost estimator helps contractors, homeowners, builders, estimators and DIY users price out a construction or renovation project quickly. Add a line for every material, set the quantity, the unit it is sold in and the price per unit, and the calculator works out each line total and the project grand total instantly.
The math is simple and transparent: each line total is quantity × price per unit, and the subtotal is the sum of every line. An optional waste / over-order percentage is applied across the subtotal — useful for tile, lumber, aggregate and anything else where you order extra to cover offcuts and breakage — and an optional sales tax or VAT percentage is applied after waste to give the grand total. Because each row is free-text, you can also add labor, delivery or equipment hire as their own line items.
Every material row has its own unit selector covering square feet, square metres, linear feet, pieces, bags, tons, cubic yards, cubic metres, gallons, litres, sheets, rolls, boxes and a generic unit, and you can pick from a dozen currencies. Add and remove rows freely, then copy the estimate to your clipboard or download a clean PDF to share with clients or suppliers. Everything runs in your browser — no signup, and your figures never leave your device.

Frequently asked questions
List every material your project needs, then for each one enter the quantity, the unit it is sold in (sq ft, pieces, bags, tons, cubic yards, and so on) and the price per unit. The calculator multiplies quantity by unit price for each line, adds an optional waste allowance, sums every line into a subtotal, then applies any sales tax to give the grand total. The whole estimate updates live as you type.
By default it focuses on material costs, but because every line is free-text you can add labor as its own line item — for example a row named "Labor" with the number of hours as the quantity and the hourly rate as the unit price. The grand total will then include both materials and labor. The same trick works for delivery charges, equipment hire or any other project cost.
Yes. Enter a waste or over-order percentage and it is applied across the whole material subtotal. A 10% waste allowance means you are budgeting for 10% extra material to cover offcuts, breakage and over-ordering, which is typical for tile, lumber and aggregate. The waste amount is shown as its own line in the summary so you can see exactly how much buffer you've added before tax.
Each material row has its own unit selector covering the most common construction units: square feet, square metres, linear feet, pieces, bags, tons, cubic yards, cubic metres, gallons, litres, sheets, rolls, boxes and a generic unit. Because cost is simply quantity times unit price, you can mix any units across rows — square feet for flooring, bags for cement, pieces for fixtures, all in the same estimate.
Yes, the Material Cost Calculator is completely free with no signup required. It runs entirely in your browser, so your figures are never uploaded to any server, and you can copy the estimate or download it as a PDF at any time to share with clients or suppliers.
